This I know for sure...

I love bread. (Feeling a bit like Oprah here if you've seen her Weight Watchers commercial.) I love the smell of fresh baked bread. I love it plain, toasted, buttered, pretty much any way you can eat it, but my favorite way is to pick up a fresh loaf or fresh rolls from a bakery (if I don't make it myself) and eat it as is.

The other day my sister and I went shopping and I of course had to stop and buy fresh baked rolls. I opened the cellophane package and inhaled. The scent of those rolls was amazing. "Heaven," I said as I took another whiff. That unconscious comment got me thinking - what do people think Heaven smells like?

I asked my sister in her opinion what did she think Heaven smelled like. Her answer - laundry dried outside in the summer. I started asking other family members and friends. The answers ranged from peanut butter, pastries, chocolate, a mother's perfume, fresh and clean, and more.

I'd like to take an informal poll just because I'm curious. What do you think Heaven smells like? There is no wrong answer. It's what you personally think.

  1. For me, Heaven smells like the Scottish Highlands in summer. As far as I can determine, that's a combination of unpolluted air, thyme and pine trees.

  2. What a great question!!
To me, Heaven smells like that moment right after the rain begins - crisp and clean, moist and fresh. As if the rain were washing every bad thing away.
Corny, I know, but it just makes me feel GOOD when I smell that,

    1. The scent from a childhood memory would be a great thing for Heaven to smell like.

  4. I think it will be a floral scent. Maybe soft orange blossom, or faded sweet rose. Nothing heavy, just a soft wafting on the breeze type of scent.

    1. I know exactly what you mean. We have a neighbor with an enormous rosebush and every now and then, we get a rose scent coming in through our windows.

  5. I think if smells like a forest after it rains. A mixture of flowers, wet leaves and damp earth. For certain it would be a scent from the natural world. We can't begin to create any smell as lovely as what you find in nature.

  6. Either Acadia National Park--balsam, fern, and a hint of the sea--or chocolate chip cookies in the oven.
