What's Up Wednesday

This week...

First, I'd like to apologize for no post on Monday. Between Easter and my mom's surgery Monday, I forgot all about putting a post up.

My current WIP (work in progress): Still finishing up revisions. Not sure how much I'm going to get done this week as I'm helping my mom out during her recovery.

What I'm reading: I just started Heat Exchange by Shannon Stacey. It's the first book in her Boston Fire series. I've never read anything by Ms. Stacey so I'm eager to see how it goes.

Random things:  I'm enjoying the beautiful spring weather we've been having. It was 72 degrees this past Sunday. It's supposed to be about 60 tomorrow and 66 degrees on Thursday. The sad part is the meteorologists are forecasting all next week to be in the mid 30's.

This I know for sure...

My mom is having cataract surgery on Monday so I have next week off from the day job. I took the time off help her out while she recovers. She can't lift anything for a few days after the surgery so I'll do her laundry and vacuuming and such. I'm looking forward to spending the time with her outside of our every day routines.

On a separate note, I hope you and your families have a wonderful Easter holiday this weekend.

What's Up Wednesday

This week...

My current WIP (work in progress):  Had a really good revision week. I even did 23 pages in one day which is huge for me.

What I'm reading: I just finished a book yesterday and haven't started a new one yet. I did just buy Lady Bridget's Diary by Maya Rodale that's calling my name, but I also have library books I need to read before they have to be returned.

Random things:  I've started a few seedlings that I hope will take. The seeds are left over from last year so I'm not sure if they'll germinate or not.

Oh My Muse, Wherefore Art Thou?

I've always found revisions much easier than writing the first draft. The story itself is already down, revising is making sure everything makes sense, flows well, that there aren't any plot holes, or suddenly disappearing characters, spelling and grammar make sense and so on.

I can't say revisions have been easier than writing the original draft this time around. There are scenes in the current version that need major rewriting. I knew that when I wrote them. At the time, I was having trouble getting the scenes on paper so I wrote bare bones paragraphs and highlighted them in yellow so I would know these needed to be fleshed out. I also have a couple of places where I inserted the line, "Need better transition here."

I reached point where I needed to rework those scenes and transitions. I'd been struggling to get them to convey what I need them to. It felt like my muse had gotten tired of the cold and sleety snow and headed off to Hawaii without me.

I'd never really had a case of writer's block like this before. What to do? I tried taking a few days off in the past and found it makes it harder for me to get back to writing at all. There's always something that needs to be done that is ready to take over the time designated as writing time.

So I decided to borrow the mantra from Nike -- Just Do It. It was hard. I won't lie. Some days I think I spent more time staring at the blinking cursor than I did crafting sentences. But slowly, and I mean slowly - a snail could have outpaced me, the words started to come. After a couple of weeks, it got a bit easier and with each succeeding day, it's gotten a even easier. I'm still finishing up the last of the revisions but I'm feeling like my muse is home and we're back in sync.

Next up, tackling the dreaded synopsis for this book. (In case you don't know what a synopsis is - It's a summary of the novel's storyline which contains all the pertinent facts/information. Generally, it's not longer than two to four pages.) For me, it's hard to boil down everything I think is important in a 350 to 400 page book into 2 or 4 pages. But I'm not alone. Most writers hate writing them, even bestselling authors who on occasion still have to submit one.

Wish me luck.

This I know for sure...

As a writer, I do my best to keep up with changes in the publishing industry. While I never submitted any work to them for publication, I was sad to hear Samhain Publishing is closing its doors. In case you're unfamiliar with them, they launched their business in 2005. They publish romance as well as horror. They also publish such well known authors such as Maya Banks and Vivien Arend.

Here's an article from Publishers Weekly with more information. Samhain Shut Down

What's Up Wednesday

This week...

My current WIP (work in progress): I feel like I'm making real headway on the revisions. (Finally!) I think I'm on target to meet my goal of having them completed by the end of this month.

Quote of the Week: "When you focus on the goodness in your life, you create more of it." ~ Oprah Winfrey

What I'm reading: I'm just starting The Blind by Shelley Coriell. This is the third book in her Apostles series. I barely started The Spinster's Guide to Scandalous Behavior by Jennifer McQuiston but set it aside only because it's a library book and is due tomorrow. I didn't want to get too far into it and then not be able to finish it. I'm hoping I'll be able to renew it and have more time to read it.

Random things: It's been pretty warm in upstate NY. Temperatures have been in the mid 50's or higher for the past week or so which is about 20 degrees higher than normal. My tulips and hyacinths are starting to shoot up. No blossoms yet though. The bad news is it's supposed to snow this weekend.

First Lines

Last week I came across this blog post about the opening lines of novels. I found it interesting and informative so I'm sharing it here. http://www.rachellegardner.com/that-all-important-first-line/

This I know for sure...

I was talking to a friend how I feel like I'm not accomplishing everything I feel I should be. She sent me the picture below and said, "Be like Dory. If you just keep swimming, you'll get where you want to be." It gave me a new outlook. So if you're struggling to accomplish something whether it's writing related, heath related, or skill related...Just keep swimming. :o)

What's Up Wednesday

This week...

My current WIP (work in progress): I'm working on typing all the revisions I've done on paper onto the laptop. I hope to have them finished by the end of this week.

Quote of the Week: "A year from now, you'll wish you had started today." ~ Anonymous

What I'm reading: A Taste of Sugar by Marina Adair. This is the third book in the Sugar, Georgia series.

Random things: The kitten we got about 8 months ago has decided he'd like to explore the outdoors. He's an indoor cat, but he always tries to escape and cries at the door whenever anyone leaves. I'm looking for a tag I can attach to his collar that will have his name and our phone number just in case he does get out.
